Recognizing Invisible Violence: The Criminalization of Women

The Barbra Schlifer Clinic,  for their Criminalization of Women Project is hosting a free legal event on November 25, 2020 to commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a panel discussion to discuss the criminalization of women in the Canadian legal Justice system.

The event will discuss the issue of criminalization of women in the Canadian legal justice system and its specific impacts on racialized women.

The event is free and open to all. The panel will explore the alarming trend of criminalization of women, in particular survivors of gender-based violence within the legal justice system. We will explore its causes and the particularly harmful consequences for racialized women as seen within the Clinic’s own Criminalization of Women Project.

This event features Deepa Mattoo, Executive Director of the Barbara Schlifer Clinic, Emilie Coyle, Executive Director of the Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies and is Emma Halpern – Executive Director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia.

This would be of particular interest to criminal lawyers and those who work (or hope to work) in the VAW/GBV sector.
